Curly hair is the hair type that everyone loves to look at. It’s bouncy, voluminous, and just gorgeous. But, what people don’t always think about is the effort that goes into making our curls listen to the way you want them to look. Or if you have wavy or straight hair, how much effort goes into making your hair temporarily curly. But, here at Zohna we think about that effort and understand the struggle. That said, we want to make your life a bit easier and why with a short tutorial on how to do a curly hair updo.

    Materials needed:

    1. Curl enhancing cream
    2. Wide-tooth comb (optional)
    3. Hair tie
    4. Bobby pins
    5. Hairspray

    Step #1

Select a curl-enhancing product tailored to your hair type. For fine or thin curls, opt for lightweight mousses or sprays for volume. If you have thick or coarse curls, go for creams or gels that provide moisture and control.

    Step #2

Evenly distribute the chosen product through your curls. Ensure thorough coverage, focusing on enhancing your natural curl pattern.

    Step #3

Using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb, gently gather your curls at the nape of your neck. Pull out some of the pieces at the front of your head and allow them to frame your face for a soft touch.

    Step #4

Begin by putting your curls into a ponytail and then twist the ponytail around till it gets a twisted look.

    Step #5

Then twist the twisted ponytail round itself to make a bun.

    Step #6

Using bobby pins strategically place them to hold down the bun and so that they remain hidden.

    Step #7

Spritz your curly updo lightly with hairspray to ensure it stays in place throughout the day or night. Hold the hairspray about 12 inches away from your head to avoid excessive buildup.

However, if you want to go for the natural look, it’s important to keep up a healthy hair routine to ensure your curls look their best all the time without having to take “unnatural” steps to make them look good. In the chart below we have outlined a few things you can do to make your hair look good naturally all the time.

Tips For Beautiful Naturally Curly Hair Updo Description
Hydrate Your Curls Curly hair tends to be more prone to dryness. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your curls hydrated. Look for products without sulfates and with ingredients like shea butter or argan oil.
Detangle Gently Detangle your curls when your hair is wet using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Start from the tips and work your way up to avoid breakage. Consider using a leave-in conditioner to ease the detangling process.
Regular Trims Schedule regular trims to remove split ends and keep your curls healthy. Regular maintenance helps prevent breakage and promotes overall hair health.
Maintain a Healthy Diet A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals contributes to the health of your hair. Stay hydrated and consume foods that support hair health, such as those high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E, and biotin.
Protect Your Curls While Sleeping Use a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent frizz while you sleep. Alternatively, you can protect your curls by using a satin or silk scarf, or by putting your hair in a loose pineapple-style bun on top of your head.
Protect Your Curls from Heat Limit the use of heat styling tools to prevent damage. If you must use heat, apply a heat protectant and use a diffuser on low heat.

    Curly Hair Updo For Prom

Prom night is all about looking your best and having fun doing it. This curly hair updo for prom is the best way to keep your curls on their best behavior while also getting to show them off a bit. Try out a half up half down look, with a twisted design in the back. This elevates the normal boring half up half down style and gives it a lovely little surprise whenever someone looks at the back of your head.

    Short Curly Updo

If you have short curly hair, it probably takes consistent styling to make sure it looks good. But, not all of us have the time or effort to constantly be styling our hair. Therefore, we give you the short curly updo. Simply just toss your hair up in a bun and secure any loose strands with bobby pins. We know, technically this is styling, but it’s a lot less effort than using a hot tool or blow dryer.

    Casual Updo For Curly Hair

    Zohna Tip

If you are going for a half up half down look, use a hair gel suited to your hair type and the slick back the top half of the head for a pulled-together and sleek look.

    Curly Locs Updo Style

If you have curly locs, you’re in for a treat! Locs offer a unique texture that can be beautifully showcased in an updo. We love the look of the loose bun and ponytail hybrid for your locs to rest on the top of your head. It shows off your lovely strands while accentuating the locs themselves.

The curly bun updo is a classic hairstyle that will always have your back when you don’t know what style to go for. It’s a timeless and elegant choice that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. We like to pair our curly bun updos with a side swept bang moment. The bangs look unique when pulled to one side and truly help elevate this look from boring to jaw-dropping. Don’t underestimate the power of bangs my friend.

    Half Updo With Curls

A half-up half-down style is our favorite curly hair updo option that allows you to showcase your curls while still keeping your hair off your face. You can go for a regular and boring half up look, or you can have fun with it and incorporate braids, twists, or even pretty little clips to help you shine.

    Curly Updo With Bangs

Bangs and curls are a match made in heaven. The curls bring the volume and the bangs bring the texture – and texture and volume are everything you could need and want in a haircut. That said, nearly all bangs suit curly updos in our opinions and we want to make sure you know all that you need to know about the different bang types so that you can make an informed decision on which bang will work best for you, so check out the chart below!

Bangs For Curly Updo With Bangs Description Who They Are Best For
Blunt Bangs Blunt bangs are cut straight across the forehead, creating a bold and edgy look. Blunt bangs can suit various face shapes, but they are particularly flattering on individuals with oval or heart-shaped faces. They may not be the best choice for those with round faces, as they can accentuate the roundness.
Side-Swept Bangs Side-swept bangs are longer and swept to one side, providing a softer and more versatile look. Side-swept bangs work well for almost all face shapes, particularly those with round or square faces. They can help soften angular features and add dimension.
Curtain Bangs Curtain Bangs are parted down the middle, framing the face on both sides. Curtain bangs are versatile and can complement a variety of face shapes. They work well for individuals with oval or heart-shaped faces, providing a bohemian and effortlessly chic look.
Wispy Bangs Wispy Bangs are soft and textured, with shorter pieces blending into longer strands. Wispy bangs are versatile and work well for most face shapes. They are particularly suitable for those with fine or thin hair, as they add a soft and delicate touch without overwhelming.
Pixie Bangs Pixie bangs are short and choppy, often paired with a pixie cut. Pixie bangs are great for individuals with bold and confident personalities. They can suit various face shapes, but those with oval or heart-shaped faces may find them particularly flattering.

    Curled Ponytail Updo

A ponytail updo is a classic choice that can be easily elevated with some curls. Create loose curls or add some texture to your ponytail for a chic look. If you want to make it look a bit nicer than any old ponytail, take a strand of hair from the ponytail and tie it around the elastic securing the end with a bobby pin. This will automatically make your curled ponytail updo look that much better.

    Cornrow Updo With Curls

Cornrows is the type of haircut that any person of color can rock to perfection, and if you are currently rocking them but kinda want to see what they look like pulled up we have the perfect look for you. Pulling up your cornrows and twisting them into a bun on the top of your head is a great way to showcase them. We also suggest leaving some unbraided wavy pieces hanging out for a unique effect.

    Flat Twist Updo With Curls

Flat twists can add definition and shape to your hair while allowing you to showcase your curls. It’s all about the twists and turns of your locs with an added turn over for more volume and dimension. This is a look for those who love to have fun with their hair and aren’t afraid to get weird with it!

    Braided Curly Updos

Braids and curls are a match made in heaven as we’ve said. Combining the two can result in a stunning and head-turning updo. Braiding your hair and twisting the braids up to the top of your head is a great way to add some visual excitement to a regular bun or vice versa.

    Curly Side Updo

Pulling the hair to one side has always been an underrated hairstyle and we are protesting to bring it back! The curly side updo is all about accentuating one side and allowing the hair to cascade towards it. You can do a ponytail, braid, or bun, the options are yours.

    Updo For Thick Curly Hair

Thick curly hair can be a challenge to manage, but with the right updo, you can transform your locks. For those blessed with voluminous curls, try a voluminous updo. Start by teasing the roots of your hair to add height and volume. Then, gather your curls into a loose bun or ponytail, leaving a few curls loose to frame your face – yes, it’s that easy!

    Pin Curls Updo

The pin curls technique dates back to the early 20th century when women would use bobby pins or hairpins to create defined curls that were then styled into elegant updos. Pins are great for holding everything in place, plus they can create a pretty nest of hair that looks soft and voluminous.

    Side Updo With Curls

Another side hairdo! We think it’s making a comeback…. The side updo with curls is a cute way to show off your curly strands while playing around with the fun ways you can style your curly locks. Pull everything to your good side and then style is however you like, we suggest a low bun.

    • Deep Conditioning
    • Gentle Shampooing
    • Avoiding Heat Damage
    • Healthy Diet and Hydration

    Curly Low Updo

A low updo is one of the classics for any hair type, and it works particularly well for curly hair. For this style, our favorite has to be the low knot. It’s technically a bun, but the loose curls make it look more like an area of perfectly knotted hair. Don’t forget to add accessories if you’re feeling like it, it can make the world of a difference.

    Zohna Tip

When using any kind of hot tools to curl your hair, make sure you are using a heat protectant so your strands can keep as much moisture as possible.

    90s Curly Updo

Think volume, volume, and more volume. The 90s curly updo is all about showing off your curls and embracing their greatness. We like the high bun best for showing off what you got. Don’t let yourself forget to include those face framing pieces, you know how important they are!

    Curly Updo For Natural Hair

If you’re rocking your natural curls, embrace them with a curly updo specifically designed for natural hair. This style is all about showcasing the beauty of your curls while keeping them defined and protected. Start by moisturizing your hair and applying a curl-enhancing product. Then, gather your curls into a high bun, twisting them into place and securing them with bobby pins. Finish off with a spritz of hairspray for extra hold and shine.

    Curly Updo With Headband

Did you just wake up? Is that why your hair looks like that? No judgment here, but we think we can help. The curly updo with a headband is the perfect way to quickly tame your curls and have them looking like you woke up hours ago. The headband is great for holding everything down and in place and looking fabulous while you do it.

    High Curly Updos

If you have curly hair that is so curly it’s almost coily, then this is the look for you. Using a bristle brush and a light hairspray, you’ll put your hair back tight and into a tight bun at the crown of the head. Then spray your hair with hairspray, brushing over it again with the brush, and spraying again. This will have your hair looking sleek and tame.

    Curly Mohawk Updo

The curly mohawk updo is not for those who like a classic hairstyle. This is bold, fierce, and cool. To get the look, start by sectioning off the top portion of your hair. Gather the rest of your hair into a low ponytail or bun, securing it with bobby pins. Then, take the top section of your hair and create a series of mini buns or twists, securing them with bobby pins. There you have it, a curly mohawk updo.
